Roles & Permissions

Build your server roles and assign server-wide permissions.

Add Roles & Permissions after General Settings. Roles created here become available to Categories & Channels and later modules.

Start with a template

Open Templates and choose a starting point, or select Build from scratch:

  • Community: Admin, Moderator, Member, and Muted
  • Gaming: Admin, Moderator, Game Master, and Player
  • Dev / Tech: Admin, Developer, Contributor, and Member
  • Minimal: Admin and Member

Choosing a template replaces the current regular roles and opens Edit. You can also use the import control to load roles from a JSON file. The import accepts either a role array or an object with a roles array.

Import replaces regular roles

Export the current setup first if you may need it again. The export control downloads the current roles as JSON.

Edit roles

In Edit, you can:

  • Select Add role to create a role.
  • Edit a role name directly.
  • Select its color swatch to choose a color.
  • Drag the handle to reorder it.
  • Select the trash icon to delete it.
  • Expand it to configure Hoist, Mentionable, and permissions.

Hoist displays members with the role separately in Discord's member list. Mentionable allows the role to be mentioned.

The base @everyone role is always present. You can configure its color, options, and permissions, but you cannot rename, reorder, or delete it.

Assign permissions

Expand a role and select the permissions it should receive. Permissions are organized into three groups:

GroupPermissions
GeneralAdministrator, Manage Server, Manage Channels, Manage Roles, Kick Members, Ban Members
TextView Channel, Send Messages, Read History, Manage Messages, Attach Files, Embed Links, Add Reactions
VoiceConnect, Speak, Mute Members, Deafen Members, Move Members

Administrator grants broad access

Assign Administrator only to trusted roles. It grants extensive control over the Discord server.
